chewy walnut brownies

i came across this recipe by theveggieblackboard on tumblr but you can check her out on twitter and Facebook too! this recipe turned out pretty good for half burnt brownies and i doubled the recipe my first time. we suspected the 200 degree was in Celsius and later turning up the heat it got nice and burnt on the bottom : )  so 200 Celsius is about 392 Fahrenheit. i suggest baking at the degree you normally do brownies. usually that is around 350 or 425 degrees for thicker brownies. here is my round two pictures...soo much better!

makes about 12 brownies:
  • 1 cup of flour (wholegrain to make it super healthy)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup of brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup of 100% cocoa powder
  • 1 cup rice milk or soy milk (i used coconut milk even)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup of apple sauce
  • 1/2 cup or more of crushed walnuts
 how to:
  1. mix all dry ingredients together in a bowl; in a separate bowl combine all moist ingredients
  2. once both mixtures are well stirred, slowly add the wet part to the dry part.
  3. mix until it is well combined and smooth
  4. check taste and consistency and add whatever you feel is lacking, i.e. more sugar, more vanilla or maybe some nutmeg?
  5. pour the finished mixture into a greased cake tray and pop it into a preheated oven at around 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes
  6. to make sure it is baked all the way through stick a toothpick into the brownies; if it comes out with no brownie residue it’s ready
  7. you can save some chocolate spread as glazing on top!
