antibiotic resistance: meat industry

once again we see a story about the detrimental antibiotic overuse on animals by the corporations.do your part and don't by the antibiotic laden meat. do meatless monday's- cut down meat intake, buy local or raise your own! or obvious choice..go vegan.
CDC warns of antibiotic resistant bacteria

"Describing CRE as “nightmare bacteria,” CDC director Dr. Tom Frieden warned that “our strongest antibiotics don’t work and patients are left with potentially untreatable infections.” The bacteria are particularly deadly, killing up to half of those infected"

"...former Food and Drug Administration commissioner Donald Kennedy, who warned that “routinely administering non-therapeutic doses of antibiotics to food animals contributes to antibiotic resistance.”

  • 80% of anti-microbial drugs sold in the U.S go to animal agriculture
  •  it has been DETERMINED the antibiotics used to promote growth are a THREAT to human health
  • 100,000 americans die from infections; 70% are resistant to drugs used to treat these common infections
  • Seven fold increase in the most common type of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE)
  • CRE even has the ability to give antibiotic resistance to other germs
  • antibiotics in the animal feed in turn contaminate not only our meat but rivers, groundwater, air and finally it reaches us.
"While the CDC advises hospitals and other health-care facilities about the dangers these bacteria present, no mention is made of the widespread overuse of antibiotics to increase profits in complete disregard of public health. Corporate profits increase, and the risk, like a ticking time bomb, continues to rise."
